Mali and Egypt

  • Location: Mali

  • Population: 71,323
  • Primary Religion: Islam
  • Number of Christians: none known

Though the deaf are scattered across the country, they tend to congregate together in the cities, whether in front of the central post office or at sporting events, serving as guards for mopeds and other vehicles.  Their sign language is based on American Sign Language, but has been adapted into a dialect of Bamako Sign Language, at least for those living in the city of Bamako.  As the deaf congregate, especially outside of the city, they find a way to communicate with one another, thus developing their own form of sign language.
Deaf education began in Mali in the 1990s, so it is still in its infancy.  Three schools have been started in the city of Bamako.  Very few deaf persons are educated.  Those who are were not born deaf.  There are no skill training centers in Mali for the deaf.  There are no religious services of any kind available to the Deaf in sign language.
